Here are some of the local historic sites that you can see…
The Corlea Trackway – This ancient trackway that dates back to the Iron age is a road that was of huge importance in those days. It has been preserved in the boggy land near Longford and is made of large and heavy oak planks. It is part of a track that was used for ancient ceremonies, connecting the Hill of Uisneach to Rathcroghan.
Lanesboro Commons – This walk is beautiful, particularly in the summer months when the wildflowers are in bloom. As well as the commons, part of the walk goes through the woodlands and to the River Shannon, so it is a great place to enjoy a picnic on a sunny day.
Cairn Hill – Combine ancient history with beautiful views with a walk up Cairn hill. It is named for the two ancient cairns on the hill, believed to be over 5000 years old, which you will see at the summit. The walk also rewards you with amazing views across the surrounding countryside.
